Green Space, Better Mind: The Research on Nature and Mental Health

From a 120-minute weekly threshold to measurable changes in brain activity, the research on green space and mental health is more specific than 'go outside more'.

There's a reason a walk in a park feels different from a walk down a busy street, and it's not just aesthetic preference. A substantial body of research now links time spent in natural environments to measurable changes in mood, stress hormones, and even brain activity โ€” enough that some health systems have started prescribing nature exposure the way they'd prescribe a medication, dose and all.

Here's what the research actually finds about how much nature exposure matters, how quickly it works, what's actually happening in the brain and body during it, and where the evidence is stronger or weaker than the wellness-industry version of go outside more tends to suggest.

The 120-minute threshold

One large-scale study, drawing on survey data from nearly 20,000 people across England, found that spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature โ€” whether in a single visit or spread across several โ€” was associated with significantly better self-reported health and wellbeing than spending no time in nature at all. Notably, the association held regardless of how the time was distributed, but the benefit plateaued beyond that threshold: more than 120 minutes didn't reliably predict additional gains.

What a natural setting does to a ruminating brain

Neuroimaging research offers a mechanism for at least part of this effect. In one comparative study, participants who took a 90-minute walk through a natural setting showed reduced activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex โ€” a brain region strongly associated with rumination and implicated in depression โ€” compared to participants who walked an equivalent distance through an urban setting. Self-reported rumination dropped correspondingly in the nature-walk group but not the urban-walk group, despite identical exercise duration and intensity.

It doesn't require wilderness

A common misconception is that the benefit requires dramatic natural settings โ€” forests, mountains, remote trails. The evidence doesn't support that threshold. Studies measuring urban green space specifically, including neighborhood parks, street trees, and even views of greenery from a window, find measurable associations with reduced stress and improved mood. Access, not grandeur, appears to be the operative variable, which matters considerably for anyone living in a dense city without easy access to wilderness.

How quickly the effect shows up

Some of the more striking findings in this literature concern speed. Self-reported mood improvements have been measured after as little as ten minutes of exposure to a natural setting in controlled trials, and the improvement tends to be largest in people who started the exposure most stressed โ€” suggesting nature exposure functions partly as a buffer that has more room to work the worse someone is feeling beforehand.

Attention restoration, a leading explanation

One influential theoretical framework, attention restoration theory, proposes that natural environments allow a specific kind of mental fatigue โ€” the fatigue of sustained, directed attention required by modern urban and digital life โ€” to recover, because natural environments capture attention effortlessly (a phenomenon researchers call soft fascination) rather than demanding it. Urban environments, by contrast, require constant directed attention to navigate safely, which is cognitively depleting in a way many people don't consciously register until they leave it.

Green space and inequality

Access to green space is unevenly distributed, and lower-income neighborhoods consistently have less tree cover and fewer accessible parks than wealthier ones, in most cities studied. Importantly, studies link neighborhood greenness to mental health outcomes even after adjusting for income, suggesting the effect isn't simply a proxy for wealth. This has turned green space access into a subject of public health and urban planning research, where a city plants trees is, in a small but real way, a mental health decision.

Even simulated nature helps, a little

Interestingly, exposure to images or videos of nature, and even nature sounds played through headphones, produce measurable โ€” though smaller โ€” versions of the same stress-reduction effect found with real outdoor exposure. This has practical relevance for anyone without easy outdoor access: it's not an equivalent substitute, but it's not nothing either, and several hospital and workplace studies have used simulated nature exposure as a low-cost intervention where real green space wasn't available.

The physiological pathway runs alongside the psychological one. Studies measuring cortisol, the primary stress hormone, find measurable reductions after time in natural settings compared to matched time in urban settings, along with reductions in heart rate and blood pressure in several controlled trials. These changes appear within a fairly short window โ€” often within twenty to thirty minutes โ€” which is part of why nature exposure has been studied as a rapid-acting stress intervention rather than only a long-term lifestyle factor that takes months to pay off.

Nature as a buffer, not a cure

It's worth being clear about the limits here. Nature exposure shows consistent, replicated associations with reduced stress and improved mood, and reasonable evidence for a role in preventing the accumulation of chronic stress. It is not evidenced as a standalone treatment for clinical depression or anxiety, and should be understood as a supportive, low-cost addition to care rather than a replacement for it, particularly for more significant symptoms.
